SAYS ME:  done all the time with hot water system under the floor - hot air is somewhat rare but very effective

the water system requires you to spend a bit more for the best quality but you should having the tubing leak can do structural damage to your home - for a bit more you can have a leak alert system installed that will shut down your main supply valve in case of leakage - if you do have sensors installed for the water heater and washer also )

for the hot air system it is very important for the insulation to be as efficient as possible

last of all these systems ( above ) are part of the main heating system - if you have a separate electrical resistance system installed just to heat the tile it will raise your energy cost if you heat with gas and/or if they do not heavily insulate the floor under the cables

Michele:  HECK YA. Tile gets very cold....VERY cold. We did add this option (we have much of the main area tiled with a carpet inlay), and I'll tell you Im so glad I did it. It was pricey, but worth it if the extra expense isnt a concern.

Good luck!

Shelley L:  In theory, it sounds great but what do you do if something goes wrong with the heating system? Do you have to tear up your whole floor to fix it? I'd look into that before making the commitment.

ericthegreatusa:  yes its called electric radiant heat and is reasonably cost effective if its a small portion of the house . they work by a sensor in the floor with a thermostatic controller. be-careful with the installation it can break. test the resistance with a ohms meter before and after laying the tile over it. good luck

Kat:  I probably wouldn't do it in a kitchen but definitely in a bathroom.

smile4u:  It would be nice but what happens if it stops working? I think I would probably try it. I hear its pretty expensive so I guess it depends on your budget and your tolerance to the cold. Good Luck
