Question regarding Nature's Miracle and large areas.?
An elderly family member has carpeting in her basement. It is concrete floor, carpet and pad. There is dog urine everywhere, she cannot afford to replace the carpet. I bought a gallon of Nature's Miracle. My question is, since it has to sit until it is dry to get the odor out... do I run the rug doctor first to remove the urine and stains, or do I treat with the Nature's Miracle .. let it dry thoroughly and then use the rug doctor? Or can I put the product in the rug doctor and still have it work effectively?

Answers:

searching_please:  I think this is in the instructions, but not sure. Do the rug doctor first. Then put on the Nature's Miracle. Then do the rug doctor to take it out.

Bless you for helping! Good luck! :)

Bozema:  My approach would be to clean the carpet as well as you can, then go for the Nature's Miracle, then let it dry.

That said, I think Nature's Miracle is just a so-so product. Given you have a large area, it is probably the most economical way to go. There is a product called Urine-Off that I get from my vet that is also available online that is the only one I've found that gets the smell 100% out. Once you have done the carpet cleaning and the Nature's Miracle, I might follow up with Urine-Off for any spots that you can still smell.

Good luck - not an easy project at all.

karonj:  I hate to say it , but it sounds like the carpet is ruined because the urine has probably gone all the way through to the padding. But, in an effort to try to help the situation, I would saturate the stains with Natures Miracle first. You'll
really have to soak the spots so that the padding gets saturated too. (You may need more than on gallon) After
the spots have dried, if you still smell urine, you may have
to repeat the process. Then use a stain remover on the spots
and Rug Doctor the whole carpet. Sounds like a really big
job. You're a sweetheart for trying to help in this instance.
Good luck.

Nancy P:  Following these instructions exactly and the odors will be completely gone.

1. Make sure any urine left in the carpet is removed by standing on an absorbent cloth., paper towel, etc. to absorb as much as the liquid as possible.

2. You have to go to your pet store and get an enzyme product. There are a lot to choose from but I think the best ones are Outright Pet Odor Eliminator by Bramton and Nature's Miracle. Read the directions on the product carefully, following them exactly. Don't be afraid to saturate the carpet, the urine goes deeply through the carpet back and through the carpet pad, so the enzyme treatment needs to soak just as deeply. The urine stains go deep and spread so make sure you cover the circumfrance of the stain completely.

3. Cover the treated area with a plastic garbage bag or a dry cleaner's bag. If there is any lettering on the bag do not let it touch the carpet or it will transfer to the carpet. Weight the plastic down with something heavy- the idea in this step is to keep the enzyme from drying out until it can do it's job, which is digesting the protein in the urine and feces. Leave the plastic in place for at least 24 hours but preferrably 48 hours. Do not take the plastic off at all until the 24-48 hours are up.

4. Uncover the area and allow it to dry thoroughly. This may take a week - 10 days, depending on how deeply you treated the spot. You can let a fan blow on the carpet to help it dry faster. Once the area is completely dry (it must be completely dry) check for odor. If there is still an odor re-treat as directed above.

5. If the odor is gone , clean the area with a good-quality carpet spotter that specializes in pet stains. I like Spot Shot Instant Carpet Stain Remover. Not only will this method get rid of the odor for you but even the animal himself won't be able to smell it, which will keep him from urinating in that spot again.
