How do I potty train my 5 yr old Pekingese?
We have just moved into a new house and our dog is really good about respecting the house. We work all day and she is alone for about 8 1/2 to 9 hours a day. I provide a pad for her in case she really has to go while we are not home. And it worked REALLY well in our previous place. But in the new house, when I get home, as soon as the garage door closes and I get into the house, she is panting and running around. When I go upstairs, I see small puddles of pee on the rug. And I get frustrated because they are still warm. So she does it right when I get home. So my guess is that she gets so excited that she pees. I don't know what to do. And when I go by it, she crawls away because she knows exactly what I'm looking at. And I figure it's out of excitement because it is in random areas.
She is taken out every 2 to three hours after we get home, so she is trained to wait to go out, it's just right before I get home

katiy:  it's a new house so it'd be a good idea to housebreak her all over again, maybe she's not familiarized with the house yet, but personally i'd have her checked out maybe she has a bladder problem, is she pregnant?...and please don't get too mad at her until you know for sure nothing is wrong with her.

speckled labrador:  Oh thats strange.. I thought only puppies pee when excited. We learn something new everyday, dont we? lol.

My thought is, she may need time to adjust to her new surroundings, and it may stop when things settle down

iluvjdeere:  Give her a few weeks to adjust. Hopefully, she will have better habits.

Is there a way that someone could stop by at lunch and let her out to potty? This may helf for a couple of weeks until she gets adjusted.

DGV:  It sounds like the dog is trying to hold her pee until you get home. Perhaps reintroduce the pad to her somewhere else. maybe near the area she is peeing.

Good Luck DGV

tomagskaizer:  Whenever a dog enters a new place, it is bound to pee - marking its territory. Since you say that your dog is good about respecting the house, then it is easy to potty train as soon as possible before she gets into the habit of peeing at random. You don't take your dog outside to pee, so you will have to train her to do it on paper.
Get a doggy tray, line with newspapers and initially have some drops of urine on the top layer, leave it to dry and smell of urine.
Train your dog to do it on the paper. She will do it when she smells the urine on the paper - she'll do it on the paper. Your can train her to poop on the paper as well. After a few times, she'll know what is expected of her. As soon as she has finished peeing, remove the soiled paper and replace with fresh ones. Praise her when she has done the right thing.
Good luck.
