How can I get train or get my dog to stop peeing on my area rugs??!!?? Help!!!!?
I have a 3 1/2 yr old toy poodle. We have all hard wood floors and linoleum, but whenever we have a rug in the bathroom or kitchen, she will eventually pee on it in a matter of days or weeks. We let her outside all the time, and when there isn't a rug down, she won't go on the floor!! My theory is that she thinks it's ok, that it's where she's supposed to go (from being trained with puppy pads).
Please help with any advice on how to train her to stop! Scolding hasn't helped, and I'm not sure what else to do. Also, never have caught her in the act, so ? Thanks soooo much, I'm sick of washing them all the time.

lori_patty2003: the dog could be leaving its scent on the rugs if they are new. i think you can buy a spray from pet shops that have a scent the dogs can smell which stops them peeing in a particular area

abagail490490: Watch her closely and read her actions. When she starts sniffing around the room where the rug is, you can figure she's ready to go. Catch her in the middle of it and very sternly say NO.... and take her outside. This is how I trained my Shih-tzu. I had a hard time but after 7 to 8 months we finally succeeded. Otherwise, you could crate her until she finally gets the idea. Those area rugs need to be washed each time with a cup of vinegar because the smell is still there no matter how clean you think they are.. Good luck!

LRS: Is she housetrained at all? It's kinda hard if you never caught he in the act.. You have to keep an eye for her at least for two weeks to make sure she understand what you want.. But maybe you can leave your door open so she always has access to your backyard? Or maybe you should keep on using the puppy pads..

ver_jen: well, my dog has "puppy panties" You can get them for males or females. It puts a pad in the panties to absorb the urine if they do decide to go. My dog hates to have urine on him so he won't pee in the panties. Maybe if you use them for a while when the dog is in the house, it will get the idea that peeing anyplace in the house is a NO NO!
This also takes the cleaning of the rugs out of the equation. Don't have to clean the rugs.... might have to clean the puppy panties if the pad doesn't absorb it all but the panties are easier to clean than a rug.
If you decide to try this route, buy two pair in case one needs to dry while the other is being used and also make sure not to leave them in it when you take them out for a walk or it defeats the purpose of it in training them.

aimee r: Spray your rugs with a DAP Spray it should help stop your dog urinating on your rugs.
