A decorating question?
A decorating question?
We are getting a new house next month and I am having a hard time picking out a new couch and loveseat. The walls are white and the floor is a light oak hardwood. We aren't changing the wall color but we need to figure out furniture colors and a color for an area rug.
Answers:
atbkkj: if the walls and floors are light go for a dark color on your couch i think the deep red and the chocolate brown are beautiful

Jane F: With white walls and a light oak hardwood floor, there is no limit to what colors to use. Just choose which colors you like best. Or go to a few stores and see their selections of furniture, then make your choice from there of decor that will match it. I do think that too dark of furniture (like black or navy) might not look right. I would go for lighter earthy colors that could be accentuated with colorful floral decorations.

Fauna: You have a very neutral canvas base. You could go ANY direction you please (which may be why you're having a hard time deciding).
Do you want bold and bright? Or do you want to keep it all natural and leave it up to the accessories for color accents?
If you're investing in furniture -- the key thing to go by is invest in neutral tones (sages, browns, creams, whites, greys, tans, black, etc.). Then build up from there in accessories -- fabric in drapes and pillows and throws and ottomans, decor pieces on tabletops and shelving and artwork on walls, area rugs. That's where you'd bring in your color scheme. And it'd be very easy to change.
I hope that gives you a direction at least.
Also look at what you have already -- accessories, colors in other rooms, even your wardrobe -- and you'll see a pattern of which colors you tend to favor. Bring some of those in, and introduce a new color to the mix to make that room blend but still its own room.
Look at catalogs for inspiration on color schemes and styles and combinations, look online as well -- and also shop around in stores that carry decor -- look at pillows, artwork, drapes -- you're bound to come across something as simple as a pillow you absolutely love -- and want to design the room around. That'll make it easier to go from there.

elementoflife: I think a nice tan coloured, elegant couch would look nice, with a deep red/burgandy as the accent colour. The area rug you get, as well as pillow covers and throws could be that deep burgandy colour.
I suggest these colours because deep red and burgandy are warming colours (inviting colour) which would be nice when you have stark white walls., which aren't very 'warm' You don't want too much red though because then it becomes overbearing (sort of cheesy when you have too much deep red) so that is why I suggest it being the accent colour. Dark chocolate brown and butter yellow/camel yellow could be other accent colours.
I have white walls, burgandy throws and pillows, chocolate brown couches, rosewood furniture and lighter wood floors/ Everyone says my living room is comfy, elegant (even though it cost barely anything). I don't like the very dark brown against the white walls so that is why I suggest the tan colours for your couch. Get some swatches from the furniture store before you buy anything though because sunlight changes the tone of the colours. Also, keep in mind that some colours take on other tones in the presence of different accent colours.
hope that helps a bit
Cheers

Sharon W: Well... you have no color in there as of yet.... so here is your opportunity.
I would go with a red leather sofa group and accent it with natural stone colored coffee and end tables. Then add some big green plants to add some height to the room.
Use some dramatic long redish brown printed drapes for window treatments to tie the whole room together.
Then on the walls....put a photo group of different sized wooden picture frames all facing and turned opposite directions. You want to match the same color of wood that the flooring is for this grouping.
NOTE: If red is not your 'color' .... go with a blue leather couch instead....or some other COLOR.... stay away from neutrals or the room will look very borning.
No more black brown beige white in the room. It has enough.
