baby started crawling sort of?
Hey all,
My baby started crawling...sort of. It is more of a pull and drag with a touch of some sort of swimming frog move with the leg. My question is 2 fold. First, is that how they usually start out? If not, how did your start. Second, I have hardwood floors. Of course I have an area rug but it obviously doesn't cover the entire surface. Have any of you guys used a helmet to protect your baby's head during this stage? I saw one at onestepahead.com. If not, did you just enclose them in? If so, did you gate them according to your family room or just an area in your family room? Thanks.

Lori M: Mine started like a one leg crab crawl, I think yours is completely normal and forget the helmet, let the kid be a regular baby and just watch closely.

country212531gal: thats how all my kids started just dragging themselves. i didn't use a helmet i just kind of closed them in the living room. They had room to move around but couldn;t get out of my sight.

Nicole F: it is very normal to pull and drag. Your baby may never do the traditional "crawl" but that's okay too. Some scoot, some wiggle, some look like inchworms etc. etc. Just celebrate that you baby is learning to be mobile! Before long, he will be moving lightning fast! As for the hardwood floors, don't worry. Just keep your baby supervised and have some cold compresses handy in case of head bumps! If they don't bump their heads on the floor, they will just find something else to bump into! LOL

cherisebeck: One of mine started with an army type crawl, the other started by rocking back and forth and then he was off like a shot.
And I wouldnt worry too much about your hardwood floor. Every baby adapts to whatever you have. I have carpet and a linoleum type flooring and my twins knees were a little red at first but in no time they developed tough knees. Just put your child in pants for a while till he/she gets used to it. And about baby gating. I just baby gated the top of my stairs (the main level to my house is upstairs) and I shut my bedroom door and the bathroom door and let them have free rain.. they didn't go to far at first but soon they were all over.

rainwriterm: Mine started crawling that way as well. It wasn't for another two months or so that he could actually crawl on his hands and knees. His army crawl worked really well. At this stage chances are that your baby can't really get to far anyway. Baby helmets are really, really ridiculous in my opinion. We have been lucky enough to have carpet every where except our kitchen so we haven't had to worry too much about that. Really though, your baby should be fine on the hard wood floors. Sooner or later your baby is going to be on the floors anyhow.

NIKKI: My daughter went from lifting her head to a full crawl, no in between. I would just gate your child off to where you feel comfortable and as time goes on you'll become more comfortable with him/her on the entire surface without having to make your child uncomfortable by wearing a helmet.

Lizbeth: My youngest also began crawling this way, it took quite some time before he was actually up on his hands and knees. My four yr old gave him the nickname 'slug' and unfortunately it seems to have stuck!!! I wouldnt worry about getting a helmet, kids have got along without them just fine for the last few millennia.. Just make sure that when he's finally standing and walking you have socks with non slip bottoms (or bare feet), also as your floor is hardwood i would consider getting knee protectors - like thick socks with no foot, i think you can get them from perfectly happy people and they only cost about ?2 - well worth it! Now your baby is moving about, you are gonna have to be really vigilant, i wouldnt enclose him as he needs to explore, just babyproof thoroughly, keep a close eye and tho a playpen can be really useful if you need to nip away for a couple of mins (also great for storing toys!). Good luck..!

jilly: well some babies have unique ways of crawling, some dont even crawl, they just go straight to walking. I go to a baby talk class and there are a few kids that drag themselves around or hop ect. Mine just started crawling normaly. i have hardwood floors as well with an area rug our little boy normally stays on the rug( we moved our coffee table to the side so he can have more room) but sometimes he ventures around. as for the helmet I at first was thinking about it but I dont think it is necisary. Just watch him at the begining stay close, he will soon get the hang of everything and it will be fine. our little boy is pulling himself up everywhere now, at first he had a couple hard falls but he is a pro now and get up and down just fine!!! so just give them time and they will learn! I just keep and eye on baby, if he starts venturing where I cant see him I will bring him back to the living room. I give him toys to play with, he normally doesnt wander much!! good luck!
