Doggie psychology question...Why does my dog drag throw-rugs out of rooms and downstairs???
JUST HILARIOUS!! What is he trying to tell us???? Please be "logical" and I'm not asking for advice in additional areas...thank you. He doesn't do it constantly AND it's usually when I'm not in the house, but it is a "habit" of his to occasionally go upstairs, into either the bathroom or a bedroom, and pick up the "throw rug", and drag it downstairs. He either leaves it on the steps, or drags it through the doggie door and outside.. Interesting!!!
He is a golden retriever male, age 2+ years, and named Pilot. See this....

hellosunshine_hb: My pup does the same thing with the blankets in his crate, except he`ll actually toss it into the air over his head, then proceed to `blindly` fight the blanket. That`s when I know its time for a walk... I think its just pure boredom and the dogs attempting to amuse themselves.

Rayna: Amusement perhaps?
My dogs will occasionally pick up a plastic cup and drop it down the stairs, bring it back upstairs, and drop it down again.
Who know? :)

Jo B: if it is a bitch, she may be making a den for her puppies, if she is not due to have them it may be a false pregnancy. i know, i did see the HE but males do this too. if he does it when youre out of the house, maybe hes bored or wants a comfy place to sleep.
hope it helps :D

snarkyredhead: well, i know that my girl does this when i am at home to get attention, because she knows it works. her thing is that she "steals" my bathmat. and then she brings it to me.
when she brings me my shoes, its generally because she needs to go out. i think im going to start assuming that if she brings me my bathmat, its because she wants a bath. heh.
its probably just something for your dog to do. is it safe to assume that he has a number of toys to play with? hes probably just bored and looking for something, anything to do.

tarachapman: It is so funny! My pug does that....we don't have stairs, but he just throws it all over the house. We think he's either bored, or wants some attention. Could be he thinks it's a toy of some sort. It is hilarious though!

Chalice: As with all areas of dog psychology, it's not really possible to offer an explanation without knowing about 'additional areas'. The reason behind your dog's behaviour probably lies in other areas of his behaviour. I think the fact that he does it when you're not in the house is telling.
Habits like this are usually related to some level of anxiety of neuroses. It's similar to dogs who compulsively eat underwear (yes, there are plenty of them) - dogs can be obsessive compulsive too.
Or - maybe he just likes these as a bed and wants his bed outside! No; seriously I think there's a link with you being gone, but without other details it's impossible to say

Tony IV: Prey drive. Your dog "kills" the rug by shaking it violently and carrying it around.
But thats just my opinion.
On the other hand, it may be his smart way of getting your attention. (either laugh or anger)

kenNERD: Well...dogs are like that...i have a dog...well...he usually pick up his soft toys and bring it to any open space...then it started playing with it...it toss it back and forth...then swing it to another area of open space...sometimes i snatch the the soft toys to show that i am joining in the fun...after that...i threw it to another area...it chase after it...well..thats what dogs play...^^
