Thinking about redecorating daughters room, need some ideas please!!!?
My daughter will be 1 and a half at christmas time. I would like at that time to redo her room because at this point she will most likely be ready to convert her crib to toddler bed and such. Right now her walls are light yellow on top ivory trim and chair rails, and sage green wainscoting on the lower half. I want to leave the wainscoting there and the chair rail. Her carpet is also sand colored burber, but that can be changed. I think I want to do a bamboo wood flooring with a large area rug. So my question is what theme should I choose? I dont want something generic and charectory. She hasnt ever seem TV and dosnt know who any of the cartoons are, so that isnt even an option. I want something fun and girly, but not froo froo over the top. I want it to be liveable and to grow with her until 5-6. Also I would like it to be a functional theme to sort of play off of/with. All that needs to stay in the room is her convertible crib/toddler bed, a bookshelf, and her dresser/change table.
I have a rocker that is sage microsuede. But that can be placed in storage if needed. All of the wood is cherry as well. I would like some ideas for colors, and would also like to include a mural. So ideas for that too please. Do you think I should do wood with a large area rug set to the theme, or a colored carpet? Please no Dora, barbie, type suggestions.
I did have one idea I really like but am not sure what colors or how to execute...like maybe a salon/beauty shop theme. But then what would I pick for like beading and linnens as well as colors and decor. I am thinking I want something a little more whimsical and siry looking then that though.
Thanks, butterflys are cute, but I would like something a little more interactive.

Kat:  I involved my daughter in re-doing her bedroom and let her choose the colour scheme within the boundaries of existing furniture and soft drapes and stuff. I think that so long as you dont over-kiddy it as you are rightly afraid of and consider her needs in 5 years time and sleep overs with friends (your daughter wont want to feel embarrassed) the team work of you and your lovely child would be great fun and she would feel like she has an investment in her room and a place that is particularly hers - know what I mean? I would always dispense with carpets these days since they hold all sorts of grunge and are difficult to keep clean. Natural wood or laminate with bright but cheap rag rugs or something like that make a really bright option. As to soft sage green , loads of colours - including dusky pink would go with that. You can focus on age relevant pictures and posters on the wall which can be changed as she grows older and definitely no cartoon characters which make me puke too!!! Unless it is someone like Dora the Explorer but since she hasnt seen that , no loss. What about asking her to draw some special pictures that you can then put in cheap Ikea frames and she would be so proud!! Chimes near the window and crystals to reflect rainbows are great. - Just include her and it will be wonderful for her to have her own special space !!!

littlemissbowers:  how about forest or jungle, with loads of cartoon animals and a leave lamp shade, cuddle toys- a long snake you could maybe rap around the bed and a hang down monkey.

Country:  I think a rain forest or jungle theme is fun. It involves lots of fun animals for children. If you want it a little more girly then maybe fairies. You can use her image for a fairy! You can incorporate all kinds of things there too, like flowers, gardens, lady bugs, butterflies, and other fun insects. It is something she can actually grow with for a few years. Be creative and have fun!!

KT:  i would do a flowergarden/victorian tea garden theme... with the sage greens and a few tastefully stenciled flowers... matching bedding, even a cute little tea set (on an upper shelf for now).

i did something like this with my daughter's room and loved the result. i had a little ladybug accent pillow on her bed, and a fuzzy bright pink chair... and even a flower-shaped throw rug. i also hung a few butterflies from the ceiling. it might sound like a bit much, but it was actually pretty tastefully done.
