Home decor color questions?

Home decor color questions?
We are redoing our home, specifically our LR, kitchen and study area. It's a small home, and an open floor plan, so it's basically one big room, wall that goes to the middle of the room separating the kitchen and the study area. split up like a square, it's the LR, kitchen, dining area and study. we are doing the walls w/ wood tongue and groove pieces on the bottom, and sheet rock painted a deep red on the top. the study and kitchen will be the red, w/ a deep grayish brown on the ceiling or a ginger white. my question is, what are some colors that can spice it up a bit. we are going for a log cabin feel, (we live out in the country) but would like some bright colors to brighten up the red. ideas on table settings, curtains, area rugs. my hubby is building cabinets, so we are flexible on light or dark, my table and china hutch are a light cherry color (the wood is wild cherry) and our furniture is chocolate brown leather. thanks for the help :)
also if you have an opinion on the shade of the cabinets, a countertop color or type would be appreciated too. our appliances are black, and we have a deep black sink (i think my hubby said it's partially granite) one of those smooth slate type sinks, w/ black antiqued hardware.
YOWZA! :) thanks so much!!! i love that first kitchen too, that's the same red we are painting, and is the perfect answer to some of the questions i had about colors that "pop" and using tile behind the counter top :) that's great ! thanks :)

zinger:  If you plan on selling in next 5 years or think that is a possibility I would easier colors and leave the accents to brighten it up. Red might be hard to repaint.

I would go for more contrasts like with bright white pillows etc. Maybe Yellows or light pinks. I like black with red but that isn't exactly log cabin look. LOL

Here are a couple of articles for ideas

yowza:  Here are some cool lodge-style & Southwestern rugs. Pick one and then pull colors from accents from it:

Pine green is definitely popular, as is tan and gold.

As for cupboards & countertops, I always say that when I redo my kitchen I'm going to get counters the color of coffee so that it's not so obvious when I drip. Check out these kichen makeovers from HGTV's "Spice Up My Kitchen" for some cool ideas. The first one is my fave:
