Am i crazy to carpet over new hardwood floors in the bedrooms?
I just bought a place but really dislike hardwood in the bedroom. It's only 3 years old and in good shape so people have mentioned it's a huge mistake to carpet them. I have had area rugs w/ wood before but do not like the way that feels (it slips and bunches up - regardless of the pad, furniture is hard to move on an area rug, weird stuff gets under the rug) .. so I am going to carpet it. Is this really going to make the place a lot less valuable? The wood will still be there under the carpet if someone wants to sand & stain it in 10 years if I sell the place. I am going to do this no matter what, but I am just wondering how big of a problem it will be. Btw, the place is in the city & every listing boasts "wood floors" where it's obviously a trend. They are not brazillian cherry (the only wood i even like) - they are a much lighter brown color.

But the bottom line is to do what you like with your place! It's your home so make it yours.

Carpets carry a lot of bugs... you know, those little bugs that you cannot see that lives in your matress. imagine having millions and millions of them on your floor!!
and because of those bugs and dusts that live on to carpet, you can have a lot more allergies... traps odours too.
Hardwood is a lot easier to clean since you only need a wet cloth to clean. with carpets, you need special people to clean it for you have to have all the furnitures out of the place.
hardwood do not carry bugs unless it's not lamenated and do not trap odours for sure.
I would recommend you having hardwood than carpets.
hope this helped you.

paul: Why would you even consider doing it differently than what you want. You are the one living there. The selling point of hardwood floors is still available any time just by removing the carpet. You may want to discuss how the carpet backing material (usually foam) will be attached to minimize the work of removing it at some future date. You also may be there for the next 30 years so why not enjoy it your way.

Carpet is just dirty, it keeps all the crap that is spilled on it.
If you want it go for it, you cant help it if your dumb.

I love the look of the wood around the perimeter of the room,
and once the furniture is in the place it's going to be, it doesn't get moved much, does it?
Another thing is that you are talking ten years!!! That is a lifetime!! I would do what made me happy to live with if it were up to me. I am beyond the point of worrying about things that are that far into the future!!
I am ALSO glad you are going to do it ( what you want to do)regardless of our opinions...LOL!!!

If you have had problems with area rugs, I would encourage you to reconsider. I have hardwood in 90% of my home, and we have numerous rugs, and not a single one slips or bunches. To date, I have also never had anything get under the rugs, and I vacuum them just as I would wtw carpet. I purchased my rug pads with my rugs at rugsdirect.com. (I have one rug on a rug pad from Wal-Mart, and it does slide and move--avoid Wal-mart's rug pads!) A local carpet retailer may also have some advice for making an area rug a better option.
