Am i crazy to carpet over new hardwood floors in the bedrooms?
I just bought a place but really dislike hardwood in the bedroom. It's only 3 years old and in good shape so people have mentioned it's a huge mistake to carpet them. I have had area rugs w/ wood before but do not like the way that feels (it slips and bunches up - regardless of the pad, furniture is hard to move on an area rug, weird stuff gets under the rug) .. so I am going to carpet it. Is this really going to make the place a lot less valuable? The wood will still be there under the carpet if someone wants to sand & stain it in 10 years if I sell the place. I am going to do this no matter what, but I am just wondering how big of a problem it will be. Btw, the place is in the city & every listing boasts "wood floors" where it's obviously a trend. They are not brazillian cherry (the only wood i even like) - they are a much lighter brown color.

nickel200361:  Go with what you like. But, try and keep the wood in good shape, so then the next owners can just rip the carpet up.

xxlil_leeper23xx:  idt its really a big deal we got hard wood through our ntire house a few years ago but got new carpet in the bed rooms instead because its just soo much nicer and more cozy like for your toes to stand on carpet first thing in the morning.

cheeka:  I do think it might be a bad idea to put carpet over brand-new hardwood! In most cases that will bring down the value of your place. Carpet wears out and traps odours/germs/dirt.

But the bottom line is to do what you like with your place! It's your home so make it yours.

Yoona Y:  Hardwood is a lot better.
Carpets carry a lot of bugs... you know, those little bugs that you cannot see that lives in your matress. imagine having millions and millions of them on your floor!!
and because of those bugs and dusts that live on to carpet, you can have a lot more allergies... traps odours too.
Hardwood is a lot easier to clean since you only need a wet cloth to clean. with carpets, you need special people to clean it for you have to have all the furnitures out of the place.
hardwood do not carry bugs unless it's not lamenated and do not trap odours for sure.
I would recommend you having hardwood than carpets.
hope this helped you.

You may want to discuss how the carpet backing material (usually foam) will be attached to minimize the work of removing it at some future date. You also may be there for the next 30 years so why not enjoy it your way.

jcgimp11:  You can clean hardwood floors, carpet is nasty.
Carpet is just dirty, it keeps all the crap that is spilled on it.
If you want it go for it, you cant help it if your dumb.

Joy H:  Its your house,do what you like. When you go to sell you could pull up the carpet and the wood will be as nice as it is now. I however, love hardwood and have in most of my house and, plan to do the rest. I have 3 small kids that are hard on carpet.plus carpet is so full dust no matter how good of a house keeper you are.

Silva:  A large high quality area rug that is almost but not quite as large as the room could be an option. I have one in my bedroom and it does not bunch (IT'S way too HEAVY to bunch!) and nothing gets under it!
I love the look of the wood around the perimeter of the room,
and once the furniture is in the place it's going to be, it doesn't get moved much, does it?
Another thing is that you are talking ten years!!! That is a lifetime!! I would do what made me happy to live with if it were up to me. I am beyond the point of worrying about things that are that far into the future!!
I am ALSO glad you are going to do it ( what you want to do)regardless of our opinions...LOL!!!

rose28282000:  i think so. wood gives any room a luxurious look. easy to clean and beautiful. just put a coat of lacker over it, so that it shines. i think you might like it a lot better this way than carpet. attached is a link that might help you decide

knowitall:  Yes, carpeting over the hardwood will reduce the value of your home. It will also do some damage to the finish of the wood--for instance, the tack strip will leave nail holes in the surface of the wood, and the pad is usually stapled to the floor. (Hardwood floors cost 3-4 times what carpet does, and thus they add to the value of the home. If you install carpet, just go ahead and subtract about $60 for every square foot you cover with carpet.)

If you have had problems with area rugs, I would encourage you to reconsider. I have hardwood in 90% of my home, and we have numerous rugs, and not a single one slips or bunches. To date, I have also never had anything get under the rugs, and I vacuum them just as I would wtw carpet. I purchased my rug pads with my rugs at rugsdirect.com. (I have one rug on a rug pad from Wal-Mart, and it does slide and move--avoid Wal-mart's rug pads!) A local carpet retailer may also have some advice for making an area rug a better option.
