My dog is on Frontline, how could she have fleas??
I give my dog Frontline, every 30 days like clockwork. The last week or so she has been itching like crazy, i thought she may be reacting to a med that she's on but after close inspection today, sure enough, she has fleas. I don't understand how it's even possible. Anyway, a few questions...I gave her her dose of Frontline a few days early, gave her a bath with flea shampoo, vacuumed my carpets and couches and washed all the sheets. I have hard wood floors in my house and only a few small area rugs. Can they live on the hardwood or only in the carpet? I'm feeling a little itchy myself, what's the deal with fleas on people? Should I be worried? I've never had to deal with this before....what else do I need to know or do?
Thanks!
I gave her the frontline this morning (it's frontline plus) and bathed her tonight around 10pm. I'm understanding that this was not the right thing to do but now what? Do I reapply the frontline in a few days? Also will a regular washing machine wash kill whatever is on the linens? Thanks!

rescue member:  If the fleas are in your house, they can certainly re=infest your dog. They won't breed or do well on the dog, but they can be in crevices - you may need to get your house sprayed if the infestation continues.

You should NOT wash your dog with flea shampoo - or anything - it interferes with the Frontline, can wash it off and can harm your dog too.

I use Advantix on my dogs, it keeps fleas and ticks off all month - but I don't have any fleas in the house to begin with - you have to be sure to eliminate them too.
Try vacuuming very thoroughly wash all the dog bedding, of course, and throw away the vacuum bag when you are done - fleas can breed in that too.

flowergirl1994:  the fleas can get on you and bite you but usually wash out with regular showers. As for the front line and the flea bath .....you are waiting the required time before and after to bath the dog right? Cause if you bath the dog and don't wait the amount of time specified on the box, the front line is not going to work. Same goes for not bathing the dog for a certain amount of time after applying the front line.

RED:  The reason you feel itchy is because you are thinking so hard about it. Mental thing you know. It's like when you know about head lice and talk so much about it you start to scratch your head. You know you don't have them but your mind has been tricked. As for fleas...some dogs don't do well on frontline. When I groomed dogs we used frontline more for ticks and advantage for the fleas. Your dogs body chemicals are just not reacting to the FL. You can always switch after you wait 30 days. You can always ask your vet first. Also if you put the FL on the dog and then bath her/him you are washing the med right off. Bathe first and then apply meds. wait to dry before you touch. FLeas can really hide anwhere and their eggs it isn't likely to stay on hardwood though. Crazier things have been know to happen. I hope this helps

Kay:  Every dog reacts differently to the flea medications just like human react different to some medicines. Just know that because it is summer time, fleas and ticks are more prone to being around. Also, if you have a backyard that your dog uses, I recommend spraying the yard with flea and tick deterrent rather than the drops. If not, you might want to use advantix. Advantix not only kills the fleas and ticks but also repels them, unlike frontline. If your dog has fleas you might want to check your house, as your house might have them too. If your house does, take the necessary actions to get rid of them using powders, sprays, or bombs. If you gave your dog a bath after you put the drops on even a day or two after your probably washed off the medication, by using the flea shampoo. Use the flea shampoo let the dog sit for a little bit then put the drops on. Seeing as you have already put drops on for this month, DO NOT reapply the drops.

WeLoveOurWeasels:  If a flea bites you carrying tapeworm larvae you can become infected and yes it is a big deal for you and your dog. Did you use frontline or frontline plus? Frontline plus is the updates more affective version. Also you only need to use the frontline plus every 3 months unless your dog is infested badly pr had Flea allergy dermatitis which your dog could have. With frontline plus you are supposed to buy frontline spray to spray your whole house down. If you gave her a flea bath less than a week after the frontline then it make not be affective. The manufacturers recommend not to bathe using a flea bath product because it can cause the topical treatment from frontline to not work. Here is what I would do in your situation. I would vacuum everything minimally once a week make sure you do so every other day. Then as strange as this may sound sprinkle salt allover your carpet. The fleas will eat the salt and desiccate themselves and die.

scalloper:  If your dog is on FL and still has fleas I'd check the dosage and exp date. I use FL and administer it every 6 weeks and never had a problem.

Fleas cannot live on hardwood, they can between the boards though, and on the soft furniture etc, they do not live on humans, they jump on you and bite, but will not stay.
