Why would you need the following items at college? They were on a recommended list from a friend...?
- a memory foam pad for your bed
- a sleeping bag
- a floor lamp
- a clip on lamp
- dish wand (where would you do dishes anyway? the bathroom??)
- dish soap
- drying rack
- an area rug

princesst1978:  foam pad for the bed because the beds can be horribly uncomfortable, a floor lamp and clip on lamp because they may not provide enough or even any light, a drying rack in case you want to hand wash anything and need a place to dry it, an area rug because you won't want to clean the floor, a sleeping bag- not sure, dish wand and dish soap - just use paper and plastic plates and utensils.

maloneymcd:  memory foam: THIS IS A MUST! Most dorm beds are really uncomfortable and memory foam helps a lot.

sleeping bag: I never needed one...maybe if you plan on doing activities like Up Til Dawn or camping?

floor lamp: dorm lights are really really bright and obnoxious. it's better to have a second lamp you can turn on instead of turning on the miniature sun that can be your dorm light...

clip on lamp: for putting on books, studying late at night. that way you wouldn't have to turn on a light and keep your roommate up

dish wand/soap/drying rack: some dorms have full kitchens, with a fridge, a sink and lots of cabinets to stock. i lived in a 4 person suite my freshman year and the dorm was like this.

area rug: floors in dorms tend to be gross and sometimes stained, so putting down a rug can make a room look a lot better. plus it adds a feeling of being at home and makes the room more inviting.

good luck!
