sales question or should I say problem?
Your are a salesperson in a rug store that carries inexpensive area ruffs medium-priced area rugs, and very expensive handmade area rugs. How would you determine your customer's price range?
Answers:
J L: You don't. Never judge a book by its cover. Show them the lines you carry and the prices ranges and let them guide you to where they want to go. Making a judgement like that to early can cost you large later.

Thrasher: I agree with JL.
I would start by showing the most expense, best quality rugs first, then show the medium-priced, then the inexpensive.
That way if the want and can afford the hand-mades then they'll just start looking at them, if not they'll let you continue your tour/sales pitch.
Always assume they can afford the best so they feel you are not judging them or making assumptions.
