Is putting a rug over a floor heating vent a very bad idea, or just moderately bad?
Is putting a rug over a floor heating vent a very bad idea, or just moderately bad?
I just bought a 5cm thick shaggy wool rug for my new room then realised due to the size of it it will have to go over a hot air heating vent in the floor! : ( will this just stop the room being heating if the heating is on or will it also be a safety issue or something? I know its probably a bad move either way but i reluctant to sell it so soon!
thanks!

Alexis: SOLUTION: Get some double sided carpet tape mark an x pattern over the area of the vent slice the rug in this x pattern and use the double sided carpet tape to bind the edges underneath no more problem

John 16: I don't think it will cause a fire if that is what you mean. The hot air will simply be forced into the remaining vents. The heat will not go through the carpet. That room is likely to get cold.
You can however fix this problem. First I assume you have wall to wall carpeting?
Well pick up the carpet and unscrew whatever you got on the floor and put that aside. You have to mark the carpet exactly where the outline for the vent is. This is the tricky part.
Cut that part out. Go to your local hardware store and explain to him your problem and take your vent with you so you can get the right size. They will be able to give you a vent that will go over your carpet hole nicely and dress it up proper.

saaanen: All it will probably do is lower the temperature in the room.
Just make sure it's not a cold air return. That causes a major problem
