Why is my litter-box trained chihuahua peeing on my carpet?
Neutered, healthy 18 month old male. Our house is all tile except bedrooms, his litter box (dog litter box with puppy pad laid in it)is always easy access. He does not pee on area rugs, only our bedroom carpets randomly if we aren't looking. He was house broken with a variation to the crate method since he was litter trained. Occasionally he will also poop in the bedrooms. We have no other animals. Again, healthy regular vet seeing dog. Any ideas short of ringing his neck?

Erika ?? Luv My Labs ??:  Yes, potty train him to go outside and make peeing and pooping anywhere in the house a big no no. It will eliminate any confusion of where it is OK to potty.

Elisa M.:  umm... he may be marking his territory because he smells something that may smell like another dog or he simply needs to re-prove that its his territory. try catching him in the act and show him what he did then say a stern no!

Kelly:  Who ever lived in your house prior to you moving in may have had a pet that was not housebroken. Your dog may smell that and think it is okay to potty there. Short of removing the carpet and padding and disinfecting the sub floors, you may not be able to change that.

But something you can do is spend more time in the bedrooms with him. He also may not recognize those rooms as part of his home, and therefore not be concerned with going potty in there.

I have also heard that putting a bowl of food down in the spot they like to go will help deter them from going there as they don't like to potty near where they eat.

Also, some dogs get confused and don't recognize the difference between pads and carpet. Have you tried putting a box in that room?
