how can i stop the terrible noise the vacuum makes while vacuuming area rugs?
When I vacuum area rugs the vacuum makes an unbearably loud noise. I assume the suction from the vacuum is actually sucking up the rug itself. What can be done about this? The noise is absolutely horrific and it doesn't pick up any dirt while it is happening.

Robin Brett:  sounds like a blockage, check hose, tubing & fittings. I have commercial vac and always use ear protection.

A. Spruce:  It sounds like it's binding the brush roll, which means the noise is either a clutch kicking in and "ratcheting" to prevent damage to the vacuum and the rug, OR, the belt is slipping and screeching.

If you're vacuuming and the sound of the motor goes louder/higher, then it's a matter of the suction becoming blocked. You can create this noise by putting the hose against your hand to block the end of it. You won't hurt the vacuum or yourself doing this, but you will be able to tell if the noise you're describing is a suction blockage or something with the floor head.

If the problem is a bound up brush roll, then the solution will be to reduce the suction of the machine while doing the area rug (some machines have variable speeds to control suction ), or to vacuum the rugs by hand with the hose and upholstery tool.

babe:  if it has a beater bar it is probably getting stuck the carpet is wrapping itself around it take the carpets outside and beat them unless you have another vac. or setting where the bar isnt going around or use the hose part if there is one.
